"Main contemporary world religions don’t allow women to hold high-ranking positions in the monastery hierarchy. My interest in women who break with such convention has brought me to Sri Lanka. It is here where a quiet revolution of the Buddhist order begins." - Małgorzata Dobrowolska
Women in Theravada countries have recently regained the right to become bhikkhunis (fully ordained Buddhist nuns). Nearly 1000 years since the last bhikkhunis were ordained, this documentary tells the story of the women who fought for their right to become bhikkhunis.
Małgorzata Dobrowolska is an activist and documentary filmmaker who focuses on stories of women. Małgorzata Dobrowolska holds degrees in Psychology and Multimedia.
